Ingredients

  • 1 (16 ounce) can Refrigerated Jumbo Buttermilk Biscuits (Such as Pillsbury Grands! For best results, use jumbo size biscuits.)
  • 1/4 cup All-Purpose Flour (Used as a thickening agent for the gravy.)
  • 2 1/2 cups Milk (Whole milk recommended for a richer flavor, but 2% or skim can be substituted.)
  • to taste Salt (Start with 1/4 teaspoon and adjust according to preference.)
  • to taste Freshly Ground Black Pepper (About 1/8 teaspoon or more, adjust to your liking.)

Instructions

  1. Gather all ingredients for the sausage gravy and biscuits to ensure a smooth cooking process.
  2. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). This ensures the biscuits bake evenly.
  3. Arrange refrigerated jumbo buttermilk biscuits 1 to 2 inches apart on an ungreased cookie sheet. Spacing allows for even baking and prevents the biscuits from sticking together.
  4. Bake in the preheated oven until golden brown, approximately 13 to 15 minutes. Ensure the biscuits are cooked through and golden on top. Check with a toothpick if unsure.
  5. While the biscuits are baking, prepare the sausage gravy. In a large skillet, cook the sausage crumbles over medium heat until thoroughly heated, stirring frequently for about 5 to 6 minutes. This prevents burning and ensures even cooking.
  6. Stir in the flour until well combined, ensuring the sausage is evenly coated. Cook for 1 minute to cook out the raw flour taste. This step helps to create a smooth gravy.
  7. Gradually add the milk, stirring continuously to prevent lumps from forming, until the gravy thickens and comes to a boil. Gradual addition and constant stirring are key to a lump-free gravy.
  8. Reduce heat to medium-low; simmer and stir for 2 more minutes, or until the gravy reaches the desired consistency. If the gravy is too thick, add a splash of milk to thin it out; if it's too thin, simmer longer to reduce it. Adjusting consistency is crucial for the perfect gravy.
  9. Season the sausage gravy with salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste. Seasoning enhances the flavors of the gravy. Be mindful of the sodium content of the sausage.
  10. Split the baked biscuits in half horizontally. This provides the perfect surface for the gravy.
  11. Place two biscuit halves on each of the 8 plates.
  12. Top each serving with about ⅓ cup of sausage gravy and serve immediately. Enjoy!
  13. Serve immediately for the best taste and texture. Pair with eggs or fresh fruit for a complete breakfast.
