Ingredients

  • 1 Italian Sausage (Your preferred type (sweet, hot, etc.), cooked. Approximately 5-6 inches in length.)
  • 10 tablespoons Spaghetti Sauce (Your favorite brand or homemade. Can substitute with your preferred tomato-based sauce.)
  • 1 small Onion (Sliced thinly. About 1/4 cup when sliced.)
  • 1/4 Bell Pepper (Any color, sliced thinly.)
  • 1 Hoagie Roll (Fresh, for serving. About 6-8 inches in length.)
  • Dash Red Pepper Flakes (Optional, for added heat. To taste.)

Instructions

  1. Cook the Italian sausage using your preferred method (frying, boiling, or grilling) until fully cooked and browned. Ensure the internal temperature reaches 160°F (71°C). Set aside to cool slightly.
  2. While the sausage is cooking, prepare the vegetables. In a pan, sauté the sliced onion and bell pepper with a dash of red pepper flakes (if using) over medium heat. Cook until the vegetables are softened and slightly caramelized, about 5-7 minutes. Stir occasionally to prevent burning.
  3. Warm the spaghetti sauce in the microwave for approximately 20-30 seconds, or until heated through. Alternatively, warm on the stovetop in a small saucepan over low heat.
  4. Slice the hoagie roll lengthwise, being careful not to cut all the way through. Open it up to create a pocket for the filling.
  5. Place the cooked Italian sausage inside the hoagie roll, positioning it evenly along the length of the roll.
  6. Top the sausage with the sautéed onion and bell pepper mixture, distributing evenly over the sausage.
  7. Spoon the warm spaghetti sauce generously over the vegetables and sausage. Ensure the sauce covers the filling adequately.
  8. Serve the saucy sausage sub immediately. For an extra touch, you can broil the assembled sub for 1-2 minutes to melt any cheese you might like to add on top (optional).
