Ingredients
- 2 cups All-Purpose Flour (Sifted, plus more if needed for desired consistency.)
- 2 tablespoons Granulated Sugar (Adds sweetness to the waffles.)
- 4 teaspoons Baking Powder (Leavening agent for fluffy texture.)
- 1/2 teaspoon Baking Soda (Helps with browning and lightness.)
- 1/2 teaspoon Salt (Enhances the flavors in the waffles.)
- 2 cups Buttermilk (Cold. Essential for tangy flavor and tender texture.)
- 2 Large Eggs (Lightly beaten to incorporate air.)
- 1/4 cup Unsalted Butter (Melted, plus extra for greasing the waffle iron. Adds flavor and crispness.)
Instructions
- Preheat your waffle iron according to the manufacturer's instructions. Ensure it is fully heated before adding the batter.
- In a large bowl, whisk together the sifted all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt until well combined. This ensures even distribution of the dry ingredients.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the cold buttermilk, lightly beaten eggs, and melted unsalted butter until smooth. Make sure the buttermilk is cold for the best reaction with the baking soda.
- Create a well in the center of the dry ingredients. Pour the wet ingredients (buttermilk mixture) into the well.
- Gently fold the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients until just combined. Be careful not to overmix; a few lumps are okay. Overmixing can result in tough waffles. If the batter seems too thick, add buttermilk, one tablespoon at a time, until it reaches a pourable consistency.
- Lightly grease the preheated waffle iron with melted butter or cooking spray to prevent sticking. Re-grease the iron between each waffle.
- Pour the appropriate amount of batter onto the hot waffle iron, based on the manufacturer's recommendation (usually 1/2 to 3/4 cup). Spread the batter evenly across the iron's surface.
- Close the waffle iron and cook until the waffles are golden brown and crisp, typically for 3-5 minutes, or according to your waffle iron's instructions. The waffles are ready when steam stops escaping and the indicator light turns on (if applicable).
- Carefully remove the cooked waffle from the iron using a fork or spatula. Place the waffle on a wire rack to prevent them from becoming soggy.
- Repeat with the remaining batter, greasing the iron before each waffle.
- Serve the waffles immediately while warm with your favorite toppings, such as butter, maple syrup, fresh fruit, whipped cream, powdered sugar, chocolate sauce, or berry compote.
