Ingredients

  • 2 cups All-Purpose Flour (Sifted, plus more if needed for desired consistency.)
  • 2 tablespoons Granulated Sugar (Adds sweetness to the waffles.)
  • 4 teaspoons Baking Powder (Leavening agent for fluffy texture.)
  • 1/2 teaspoon Baking Soda (Helps with browning and lightness.)
  • 1/2 teaspoon Salt (Enhances the flavors in the waffles.)
  • 2 cups Buttermilk (Cold. Essential for tangy flavor and tender texture.)
  • 2 Large Eggs (Lightly beaten to incorporate air.)
  • 1/4 cup Unsalted Butter (Melted, plus extra for greasing the waffle iron. Adds flavor and crispness.)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your waffle iron according to the manufacturer's instructions. Ensure it is fully heated before adding the batter.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the sifted all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt until well combined. This ensures even distribution of the dry ingredients.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together the cold buttermilk, lightly beaten eggs, and melted unsalted butter until smooth. Make sure the buttermilk is cold for the best reaction with the baking soda.
  4. Create a well in the center of the dry ingredients. Pour the wet ingredients (buttermilk mixture) into the well.
  5. Gently fold the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients until just combined. Be careful not to overmix; a few lumps are okay. Overmixing can result in tough waffles. If the batter seems too thick, add buttermilk, one tablespoon at a time, until it reaches a pourable consistency.
  6. Lightly grease the preheated waffle iron with melted butter or cooking spray to prevent sticking. Re-grease the iron between each waffle.
  7. Pour the appropriate amount of batter onto the hot waffle iron, based on the manufacturer's recommendation (usually 1/2 to 3/4 cup). Spread the batter evenly across the iron's surface.
  8. Close the waffle iron and cook until the waffles are golden brown and crisp, typically for 3-5 minutes, or according to your waffle iron's instructions. The waffles are ready when steam stops escaping and the indicator light turns on (if applicable).
  9. Carefully remove the cooked waffle from the iron using a fork or spatula. Place the waffle on a wire rack to prevent them from becoming soggy.
  10. Repeat with the remaining batter, greasing the iron before each waffle.
  11. Serve the waffles immediately while warm with your favorite toppings, such as butter, maple syrup, fresh fruit, whipped cream, powdered sugar, chocolate sauce, or berry compote.
